Signs your brakes need attention
4 min read · Published 22 September 2026
Brakes are the one system you never want to leave to chance. Most problems give warning signs before they become dangerous, and noticing them early often means a simpler, cheaper fix. If you are ever in doubt about braking, stop safely and call the garage rather than driving on.
Sounds to listen for
- A grinding or metal-on-metal noise when braking
- A high-pitched squeal that stops when you press the pedal
- A scraping sound that continues while driving
Feel and behaviour
- The pedal feels soft, spongy or sinks towards the floor
- The car pulls to one side when you brake
- You need to press harder or the stopping distance has grown
- The steering wheel or pedal vibrates under braking
Any of these is worth having checked. If braking feels affected right now, please stop somewhere safe and call us on 07494 227487 before driving further.
